I just got off a 5 day cruise on Voyager of the Seas. The last port of call was on Royal Caribbean’s private island called CocoCay. It’s beautiful! I was pleasantly surprised at how gorgeous the property is, with multiple beaches and pools to choose from. Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas, offers a one-of-a-kind experience for travelers seeking adventure, relaxation, and family fun. Renamed “Perfect Day at CocoCay,” this exclusive destination has been transformed into a tropical playground with attractions and amenities for every type of cruiser. Here are 10 tips for having the best experience!
1. Book Activities Early
Popular attractions like the Daredevil’s Peak waterslide, helium balloon ride, and cabanas sell out quickly. Reserve these in advance through the Royal Caribbean app or website to secure your spot. Additionally, make sure to add your friends and family who are traveling with you, so you can experience these attractions together. You can link reservations in the app or over the phone.
2. Arrive Early
The earlier you disembark, the more time you’ll have to explore. Being among the first on the island means shorter lines for attractions and prime seating at the beach. On our latest cruise, we arrived around 9:30am, and the beaches were already filling up. The ship docks around 7am, and lets people disembark by 8am. Get out there early before everyone else!
3. Pack Smart
Bring essentials like sunscreen, swimwear, a hat, and sunglasses. Don’t forget waterproof phone pouches to capture memories without worry. Also, pack a wet/dry bag. It comes in handy if you’re changing into dry clothes at the beach or pool.
4. Explore Chill Island for Relaxation and Paradise
If unwinding is your goal, head to Chill Island. Its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and tranquil vibe are perfect for a laid-back day. Rent a beach bed or cabana for added luxury, however, they are pretty pricey! Check prices before you get there.
5. Visit Thrill Waterpark for Adrenaline-Pumping Fun
Thrill seekers can’t miss the Thrill Waterpark. Home to North America’s tallest waterslide and the Caribbean’s largest wave pool, this area is a paradise for adventure lovers.
6. Try the Island’s Exclusive Dining Options
Indulge in CocoCay’s unique dining experiences. The complimentary buffet at Chill Grill offers a variety of cuisines, while Captain Jack’s serves up wings and drinks for a small fee. Don’t miss the famous Coco Loco cocktail! Another delicious option for a small lunch is Snack Shack. (i.e. We tried burgers, mozzarella stick, hot dogs, and more. They were all good!)
7. Take Advantage of the Freshwater Oasis
Oasis Lagoon, the largest freshwater pool in the Caribbean, is a must-visit. Swim up to the bar, relax on a lounger, or enjoy the paradise with family and friends. Before heading to the pools, be aware of the time of year. The pools tend to be pretty cold in the winter months, so the beaches get a little more crowded. (December-March)
8. Snorkel in the Clear Waters
CocoCay’s reefs are teeming with marine life, making it a snorkeling hotspot. Rent snorkeling gear and explore the underwater world at your own pace.
9. Don’t Forget About South Beach
For sports and activities, head to South Beach. You can try volleyball, paddleboarding, or kayaking, or simply relax in a hammock under the palm trees. We found South Beach to be much less crowded! Instead of heading to the other beaches first, get to South Beach early. It fills up fast!
10. Plan Your Day Around the Weather
Lastly, but most importantly, keep an eye on the forecast and plan your day accordingly. If rain is expected, prioritize indoor activities or cabanas with shelter. For sunny days, apply sunscreen frequently and stay hydrated. Even though it might be cloudy, the weather changes often and quickly in the Bahamas, so pay attention to it and pack a few extra items in your beach bag. It will not be a perfect day at CocoCay if you get caught in the rain with dry clothes. 🙂
Bonus Tip: Leave Time for Souvenirs
Before heading back to the ship, explore the local shops for unique keepsakes and gifts to remember your day in paradise. While you’re walking back towards the ships, try and get a photo in front of the CocoCay sign at the end of the boardwalk. There is usually a line, but it’s worth a shot. It’s iconic!
With these tips, you’re sure to have a perfect day at CocoCay. From thrilling adventures to serene relaxation, this paradise offers a slice of heaven for everyone. Start planning now and prepare for unforgettable memories!
